Dinner and A Movie… and Then Some More

October 24, 2011

It’s Friday night 7PM.  We leave the week behind and get ready for the weekend.  Starting off with a dinner at Caracas To Go in East Village.

Guasacaca and plantain chips for us to nibble on while we await our large arepa order.

The basket is far too large for us so away they go to make room for the arepas and here they come.  We order too much and these little pockets with a snappy bite are unsuspectingly large.  The De Pabellon has shredded beef with black beans, salty cheese and sweet plantains while the De Pollo is stuffed with chicken and sweet caramelized onions and melted cheddar cheese.  The La De Pernil is a soft shredded pork shoulder with mango sauce while the La Surena has both chicken and chorizo with fresh ripe avocado slices.

One more dish before we hit the road and it is more plantains!  Fried and stuffed with cheese, the yoyos are just the tiniest bit sweet with the molasses sauce moistening them.

Next up, a movie in East Village.  We laugh and cry through 50/50, a wonderful movie.  There is still room in our stomach so we end the night at one of my favorite dessert spots, Chikalicious Dessert Club.  And yes, they have new desserts – freshly made sundaes with their delicious soft serve.  I forgo my usual espresso ice shot (a shot of espresso over the soft serve) and make a beeline for the strawberry shortcake sundae.  The strawberries are fresh and pieces of cake are tender and melt into the ice cream.  Of course, the cookies n’cream is no chump either, chock full of their “Situation” and “Situation Dark” cookies.  Now, how can a night that end with these go badly?
