Hurricane Dinners: Grilled Asparagus with Miso Butter and Hill Country BBQ

No canned food or chips here.

Monday night after failing to find an open restaurant in the gusting wind in Chelsea and rejecting delivery sushi, I turned on the stove.  A stash of miso butter that I whipped up a little while ago made for a perfect base for grilled asparagus and poached eggs.  With slices of Spanish ham on top, we were ready to eat for only a few minutes before darkness fell across Chelsea.  I guess it is a little romantic to dine by candle light.  More so if this wasn’t your only source of light.

Tuesday brought less wind but also less resources, no power or water.  Half of the city was dark and the other half had trouble getting in for stores/restaurants to be fully operational.  This was one of the few times that I was glad to be on any list serve.  Before it was even noon, I found out that Hill Country will be open for dinner and had a reservation for 5 for dinner that night.  Knowing that we will have a hearty fulfilling meal at night made the rest of the day easier.

Deviled eggs and dill pickles to accompany drinks.  These were great to tide us over for a while but we were really waiting to feast on the meats at Hill Country.  A good smattering of some favorites:  moist brisket, Jalapeno sausage links, beef shoulder and BBQ chicken.  Of course, need a few helpings of sides as well:  mac n’cheese, collard greens with bacon and green bean casserole.  Those count as veggies in my mind.

I think this was the first time that I was able to make it to desserts at Hill Country.  A little sample to share among the whole group.  The red velvet cake was a clear favorite, moist and deeply chocolate.   The mini pecan pie and banana cream pudding were better enjoyed individually.

So far, this blackout/hurricane has proved pretty delicious.  Let’s hope the weekend only gets better as we get closer to normal.
