When Dessert Saves the Day: Torrija y Helado

August 9, 2011

My experience with tapas at Boqueria last week was rather interesting.  What stuck with me was unfortunately not the food, good but not amazing.  Rather, I remembered more distinctly the random pace of the meal.  It was so ad-hoc that my stomach went from hungry to satiated to hungry to full, confused by the back and forth.  And by the time the check finally came, it was like the past 2 hours and 30 minutes never happened and I was hungry again.

That said, the meal ended with one of the best desserts I have had in a while – a thick slice of “Spanish Toast” with yogurt ice cream, Torrija y Helado.  I am not sure what made it Spanish exactly but my goodness, I could not stop digging my spoon into the soft pudding-like center of the toast, carrying with it a little piece of caramelized crust.  The yogurt ice cream, cold and creamy, was just tart enough to balance out the sweet toast.

Torrija y Helado

While I might not be back for more tapas, I would love to stop by the bar for a piece of the Torrija y Helado after any meal.
